Solid Waste Management- The role of Source Reduction, Re-use, Recycling,
Biodegradability and Incineration in the Future
By Margaret Baumann
Abstract: The future of plastics solid waste management
will be strongly influenced by the combination of regulations and economics. The
solid waste management method chosen will be the least costly and most
environmentally friendly. In this light there is no one method that will win out
across the board. The solution chosen will be the best solution for a specific
application. Thus there will be a place for all of the following methods:
§
Source Reduction
§
Re-Use
§
Recycling
§
Biodegradability
§
Incineration
Regional differences and regulations will influence the
final selection but economics will always be a key factor.
